The Phaedrus Initiative
for the Re-Enchantment of the Western Subject

An independent fellowship · Bucks County, Pennsylvania · Est. 2019

“I do not require your agreement. I require your presence.”

Dr. Cosgrove Wendlebury Reeve

Senior Fellow. Resigned, with some grace, from the University of British Columbia in 2019 in protest at the dimensionality collapse of the modern academy. Took the work elsewhere.

The Initiative is the work now. Two long-form podcast appearances per fortnight. One Substack essay per Sunday. Annual reading series on the porch in fair weather. Patrons are listed below; the patrons are read, also, with gratitude, by the candlelight of the small study.

“What we are recovering is not a position. It is a posture. The young man does not need a programme. He needs a chair. He needs the chair his grandfather sat in, and the courage to ask the dead what they require of him.”

— C. W. R., from the forthcoming volume, §1.

The Forthcoming Volume

Imminent. Editorially close. Resting at the printer's. The title remains under revision.

A volume by Dr. C. W. Reeve

The Last Patriarch.

In its eleventh forthcoming year. Final imprint pending the publisher's revised release window. Pre-orders are paused at the Initiative's request, pending typographical resolution of the binding.

The volume gathers nine years of lecture material, four years of correspondence, and the entirety of the Initiative's annual reading-series transcripts. Section divisions correspond to the chambers of the symbolic lineage. Footnotes are minimal by design.

The Framework

A working schematic. Subject to the gentle revisions of the forthcoming volume.

The Initiative's diagnostic framework rests on six interlocking concepts. They are not stages. They are not phases. They are chambers — rooms the subject moves between by inclination of the wound. The chambers are drawn here in their original folio rendering, as they first appeared in the Sunday lecture of 18 October 2019.

The arrows are indicative only. Two arrows, as the careful reader will notice, terminate in unmarked space. This is intentional. The chambers without names are the chambers Dr. Reeve has not yet entered. The forthcoming volume addresses both.

Case Material

Two extended studies are currently the focus of the Initiative's analytic attention. The subjects have not yet replied to the standing invitation to dialogue. Their silence is, of course, the most articulate sentence in the conversation.

The Orphaned Archive

kataphasis-in-arrest.

A young woman of extraordinary forensic precision, who has constructed a record of her father's life in the absence of her father's blessing. She does not affirm. She does not deny. She has built a spreadsheet in the place where a yes should sit.

The case is exemplary. The case is, in the most rigorous sense, the case. She does not yet know that she has not taken the throne. She believes the throne is the cage. The throne is not the cage. The throne is the silence after.

cf. forthcoming volume, §4, ll. 22–91.

The Maenad-in-Stagecraft

aidos-under-amplification.

A younger sister, by witness rather than by blood, whose Dionysian energies have been re-channelled by the ticketed economy into the configuration of ancient ecstatic refusal. She declines the Apollonian counterweight. She fills arenas with the sound of refusal at one hundred and forty decibels.

She is, in the gentlest possible reading, one of the most tragic figures of our generation. She has been denied the Apollonian counterweight. She requires a husband old enough to remember the war.

cf. forthcoming volume, §7, ll. 4–71.

The Library

A partial accounting. The reading series rotates by chamber and by season.

The library is a working library. Books are returned, but not always quickly, and never quite to the exact slot from which they were drawn. The volumes pictured are the volumes most consulted in the Sunday hour, although the volume most consulted of all — the forthcoming — is not yet among them.

A Meditation on the Hour

From the Sunday letter, an excerpt, lightly amended.

The hour itself is a chamber. The watch on the bureau, the candle still burning, the laurel turning to a memory of laurel — these are not props. They are a posture. The posture is the work. The work is the posture.

What I have learned, in the long study of the symbolic father, is that he is never there. He is always just left, or just about to arrive. The watch hands rest between the numerals. The numeral has not yet earned them. They are awaiting the chamber.

This is, of course, the patience of the symbolic father. The father who waits. The watch which does not strike the hour.
